After colliding with powerlines in Maryland on Sunday evening, a small plane carrying two individuals became tangled in live wires about 100 feet above the earth, trapping them inside for seven hours.

Around 5:30 p.m., the single-engine plane was preparing to descend towards Montgomery County Airpark in Gaithersburg when it struck the high-tension wires close to Goshen Road and Rothbury Drive, according to authorities.

Around 12:30 a.m., the pilot and passenger were saved in what emergency personnel described as a “Herculean effort,” and they were taken to nearby trauma clinics for significant injuries.

Officials stated that although they experienced hypothermia and trauma-related injuries, they are expected to live.
