(CNN) Filmmaker of “Women Who Talk” sarah poley his son played a prank on him Day of the Innocents and the trick is as good as Oscar gold.
Polley won an Oscar for best adapted screenplay for his film “Talking Women” last month, and posted a photo on Saturday of a hilarious letter he received notifying him of urgent news related to his statuette.
“It is with the deepest regret that we tell you this: the Oscar you received was delivered in error,” the letter began.
He went on to say that he will have one more week “to enjoy his presence” at his home before the statuette must be mailed to Los Angeles, where it will be presented to the “real” winner of Best Adapted Screenplay, World War I Era. . film “All Quiet on the Western Front”.
“My 11 year old son low hung himself for April Fool’s Day this year,” Polley wrote alongside the tweet featuring the letter.
The letter went on to say that the Academy should have told Polley it was a mistake on Oscar night when they realized it, but they didn’t want another “Moonlight Year,” a reference to the Best Picture Winner Confusion of the Oscars 2017.
In a clever twist, the letter also stated “this is too cruel to be a joke”, even though they anticipated Polley would receive it on April Fool’s Day.
“We deeply apologize for any inconvenience we may have caused you,” the letter said at the end.
It was even “signed” by David Rubin, the former president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization that puts on the Academy Awards.
The Oscar, which, to be clear, Polley does indeed get to keep, was the first Academy win for the filmmaker. “Talking Women” was also nominated for best picture at the 2023 ceremony.
