Kamala Harris visits her Indian grandfather’s home in Zambia: ‘Remember my…’ | World News News

US Vice President Kamala Harris visited the family home of her maternal grandfather, PV Gopalan, in the Zambian capital, Lusaka, where he lived as an Indian Foreign Service officer in the 1960s. Kamala Harris visited the house during his trip to Zambia.

“My visit to Zambia has special meaning for me, as many of you know, and for my family. As you know, I visited Zambia, Mr. President, as a child when my grandfather worked here,” said Kamala Harris.

“In 1966, shortly after Zambia’s independence, he came to Lusaka to serve as director of relief and refugee measures. That was his title. He served as an adviser to Zambia’s first president, Kenneth Kaunda. And he was a resettlement expert of refugees,” she added.

PV Gopalan was born in Chennai in 1911 and served as an adviser to the first President of Zambia, Kenneth Kaunda, and as Assistant Secretary to the Government of India in the 1960s. In Lusaka, PV Gopalan lived at 16 Independence Avenue in the 1960s. 1960.

“I remember my time here fondly. I was a girl, so it’s a girl’s memory. But I remember being here and how it felt, the warmth and emotion that was there,” Kamala Harris said.

“So, on behalf of my family and all of us, we extend our greetings and greetings to all who are here,” added the US vice president.

PV Gopalan was appointed by the Zambian government as Director of Relief Measures and Refugees in January 1966 by the Indian government, whereupon he resigned from his role as head of the assistant secretary’s office in the Ministry of Rehabilitation.
